4 TD passes earn Kent weekly honor

Jackson State quarterback Robert Kent was somehow overlooked when it came to Southwestern Athletic Conference offensive player of the week honors a week ago.

The league office couldn't help but notice Kent this week. The sophomore from Indianola passed for 438 yards and four touchdowns in leading JSU to a key 26-14 win at Alabama A&M Saturday. Kent threw TD passes of 37, 24, 52 and 59 yards, giving him 12 on the season.

He put up those numbers Saturday despite being sacked six times and being harassed most of the night by a fierce rush.

"He got banged up pretty good, but he stuck in there," said JSU receiver Tim Manning, who hauled in one of Kent's four TD passes. "It seemed like they were bringing more than we thought they were going to bring on every play."

Kent has now thrown for 3,466 yards and 39 touchdowns in 12 career starts. He's also run for seven more.

UP NEXT: JSU, 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the SWAC, hosts Alabama State, 1-2 and 0-1, at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The homecoming game is scheduled for 3 p.m. It marks the first home game of the season for the Tigers, who lead the all-time series with Alabama State 25-3-1. The Hornets won last year's game 35-24.

"It's a key Eastern Division game for us," JSU coach Robert Hughes said. "It's going to be a big task."

DID YOU KNOW? JSU hasn't allowed a point in the third quarter this season.

MCLAURIN RETURNS: Tailback Nathan McLaurin, who sat out the Mississippi Valley game nursing a high ankle sprain, returned to the field Saturday. McLaurin rushed for 4 yards on two carries.

Tarnaka Counslor, who rushed for a career-high 188 yards against Valley, managed only 3 yards on five carries. As a team, JSU managed only 26 net rushing yards, a season low. The Tigers had just 57 yards rushing against Howard.

ODDS AND ENDS: T.C. Taylor has caught at least one touchdown pass in each of JSU's first three games. He has a team-leading 18 catches for 199 yards and five touchdowns. Since moving from quarterback to receiver last season, the 6-foot-4 senior has caught 52 passes for 758 yards and nine touchdowns. . . . Taylor and Lawrence Story each had seven receptions and went over 100 yards Saturday. It was the fourth 100-yard plus game of Story's career

No Doubt About It........

JSU is back to the old JSU of old with an explosive offensive who can put up big numbers.

They are playing well and Kent looks like he's the real deal.

JSU big test will be this month against SU and Gram.

Gram is playing flawless football as well this season.

SU has played well in Conference play, but sloppy in out of conference play.

Well be up as always for the JSU and Gram games. One of these 3 teams will be the SWAC champ at the end of the season.

We need to develop the running game. I cannot say enough about the importance of a balanced attack. If we can't run the ball we wil be introulbe from teams that blitz us and the run 3-4 defenses. If we will live by the pass we will die by the pass.
Counselor should've carried the ball far more than 5 times. This is especially true if the team was blitzing us. This is a problem that we have to fix.

I disagree.....You cant run if they are blitzing 8 in the gaps, its just not possible. They blitz every play...how can you run on that...forget running the ball if Kent can throw if over their heads. You have to take what teams are willing to give you. if they blitz the gaps every play, then they are willing ot play you man on man on two 6'5" 4.4 WRs. Thats what we took advantage of.

We have a running game and you will see it this week. But if ASU wants to put a player in each gap, we will go over their heads too. If you play JSU like AAMU did, you will lose, we have proven that twice now.

BIGCAT,

If you saw A&M at all last year, you would know that running against them was not an option. I saw them at Grambling and they didn't blitz at all. I guess they decided to go back to the blitz last week. When they do blitz, running is not an option. Like Get Ready said, we had to take what they were giving. And they gambled on being able to cover our receivers one on one and they failed. And there were a few other TD passes dropped.

Bama State won't stop the run or pass. Bet on it.

BigCat:

I agree with you about the running game. We need to develop a running game. If other schools blitz on us like AAMU did, Kent will probably get a serious injury before the season is over. He cannot continue to take the pounding that he did when we played AAMU. Our offensive line needs to step up and block more for Kent. The throwing game is fine, but we also need a running game. We cannot afford to lose Kent to a serious injury.
