The offense and defense each had bright moments during Saturday's 1 1/2-hour scrimmage.

Quarterback Robert Kent completed 11 of 20 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Scott Morris (20 yards) and Chris Jones (48 yards) each had touchdown grabs. Meanwhile, the revamped defense forced two turnovers ? one fumble, one interception ? and sacked/hurried Kent six times.

"For the second day in pads I thought it went real well," JSU coach Robert Hughes said. "The intensity was there on both sides of the ball. The offense made a lot of big plays, and I saw people going to the ball on defense."

Hughes said two young players on defense stood out: freshman defensive back Earnest Bozeman and freshman linebacker Larry McSwain.

"We're discovering new people every day," he said. "The talent is coming out as we progress."

The Braves worked out in shoulder pads and shorts at Lorman.

Coach Johnny Thomas was impressed with the team's attitudes during its first day of partial pads. Said he: "Our attitudes have always been positive although in our first day of pads we are going to be a little bit more sluggish than the days without the pads because they are carrying additional weight on them.

"Overall, we had a pretty good practice session with people pushing themselves in trying to fight through the difficulties of the hot weather."

The Braves will have an off day today and begin full-gear workouts on Monday.

Offensive line coach Richard Smither was pleased with what he saw as the Delta Devils were timed in the 40-yard dash and two-mile run and also were tested in the 225-pound bench press.

"The upperclassmen left for the summer knowing that they had to improve tremendously to get to the point of making us a competitive football team," he said. "Somewhere down the line they made the commitment and have come in here ready to play football."

Linebacker Cedric McDonald, a preseason All-SWAC selection, did the most bench-press repetitions with 28, and cornerback LeTra Lewis was tops in the 40-yard dash with a 4.31 clocking.
