Jobe hires Carney as assistant, signs recruit

Southern University men's basketball team coach Ben Jobe has addressed two voids: hiring Lee Carney as an assistant and landing his fifth and final recruit.

Carney fills the spot left by Roman Banks, who was re-assigned in early January. Banks had been an assistant at Southern for six seasons.

Jobe said forward Kenan Oliver (6-foot-8, 210 pounds) of State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., signed.

Carney, who played at Southeastern Louisiana from 1998-2001, served last season as an assistant at Panola College, a junior college in Carthage, Texas.

"We're fortunate enough to get a guy of this caliber," Jobe said. "We're looking forward to having him come on board. He fits right in, exactly what we're looking for.

"His assignment will be the same as mine and (assistant) coach (Otis) Hughley's: He'll have to do it all. I'm not much on having a coach and limiting him. ... That's what you should do with a young coach, give him an opportunity to grow."

Jobe said Carney will have administrative and recruiting duties in addition to coaching chores.

Carney finished Belaire High as the school's all-time leading scorer and was a three-time, all-district player. In 1997 he was the district MVP and a member of The Advocate's All-Metro team.

"We needed a coach who can relate to the high school coaches in this area," Jobe said. "This area will have to be the bulk of our recruiting in the future."

Oliver, originally from Montgomery, Ala., gives the Jaguars four junior-college products among its five-man class of signees.

With no sophomores on last season's team as well as only one eligible player over 6-6, Southern sought both height and experience on the recruiting trail.

Oliver and Gabriel Inglis (Globe Technical Institute in New York) are both 6-8.

"We're real happy (with the signees)," Jobe said. "We really needed the height."

Also signing with Southern were Kennedy brothers Caleb (6-6, Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, Kan.) and Marcus (6-41/2, John Carroll Catholic High in Birmingham, Ala.) Kennedy; Travazz Buckley (6-5, Faulkner State Community College in Bay Minette, Ala.).

"One day, (Marcus Kennedy) will be a real exceptional player," Jobe said

Marcus Kennedy was a very good player here in high school - and he is a quality young man. That is a good siging for the Jags - dayum he should still be in the state - those other 2 Alabama signees also should have been here. But I am glad to see at least they all signed with a HBCU
