GSU MBB signing

GRAMBLING -- Grambling State men's basketball coach made what he calls one of his biggest signings Thursday since taking over the Tigers basketball program.
Brion Rush, a 6-1 guard out of Huntington High School in Shreveport, La., signed with GSU after averaging 26.5 points, 7.6 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 4.2 steals per game as a prep senior.
"This is a big day for this program," Wright said. "Having this kid sign here is like signing another Paul Haynes. Maybe even bigger, because this kid is more local."
Haynes, who led Grambling State and the Southwestern Athletic Conference in scoring last year, as the 2001-02 SWAC Player of the Year as a sophomore as also garnered honorable mention All-America accolades.
Rush was the Player of the Year on the Shreveport Times All-City team.
"Bringing players like Paul and Brion in shows basketball players that you don't have to go a big schools to ride the bench," Wright said. "We can give quality players some quality playing time, and you can't beat that."
Wright was an assistant coach at GSU when current Huntington High School boy's coach Marvin Alexander was playing for the Tigers.
"That's going to be a big help because Marvin was coaching a system pretty much the same as the one we run here now," Wright said. "We know Brion will be a good fit because Marvin has been doing a good job of coaching the style of basketball we like to play."
Wright said he sees Rush being a No. 2 guard at Grambling.
"We'd still like to bring in a pure point guard to play there," Wright said. "Because of all of his abilities, we think Brion will be much beneficial to us in the No. 2 spot. We'll probably end up going with three starting guards next season, and he'll probably be one of them."
