State higher education officials presented doom-and-gloom budget scenarios Tuesday to a state Senate committee showing what could happen when the federal stimulus money runs dry next summer.

One such possibility included the closure of eight of the state’s 14 public universities as a means to reduce state funding of college costs by 30 percent, or about $300 million.

That scenario would involve shuttering Nicholls State University, McNeese State University, Southern University at New Orleans, LSU at Alexandria, LSU at Shreveport, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, Grambling State University and Northwestern State University.

“These are not the recommendations,â€￾ state Commissioner of Higher Education Sally Clausen emphasized . “This exercise … is to present the scale of options.â€￾

Although these actions are a year away, LSU System President John Lombardi said the time is now to start informing thousands of employees they will be terminated............(more)

This is getting serious. This possibly could close down Grambling and SUNO.
Grambling ain't going no where. One thing this talk does is to decrease enrollment.

Yes it is getting serious. But the closing of SUNO would be more likely than closing Grambling. I agree - Grambling's not going anywhere. If they even thought about closing Grambling or SUBR for that matter Black folk would be in an uproar - white people down there would not want that drama.

I submit that it shouldn't decrease enrollment, rather it should motivate and galvanize alumni and friends of the institutions to come together and support their respective colleges. The able members of our respective constituencies must rise up from a posture of apathy and begin to go to work for the cause of continuing the purposes of our HBCUs.
