Mississippi St. hires former Alcorn coach

Sam Weaver, a former head basketball coach at Alcorn State, has been hired as an assistant by Mississippi State.

Weaver's hiring is subject to approval by the state College Board, usually a formality. The College Board meets today and Thursday.

Weaver's salary will be $65,000 a year.

Weaver, 43, coached at Alcorn State from 1993-96, where his teams had a record of 20-58. He coached at Northern Iowa from 1998-2001, compiling a record of 30-57. He also served on Hattiesburg native Tim Floyd's staff at Iowa State from 1996-98. He worked as a high school coach in his home state of Arkansas during the 2001-02 season.

I'm happy for Coach Weaver. He really appeared to be turning Alcorn's program around when he left, especially when he signed Brian Adams. I'm not sure why things didn't work out for him at Northern Iowa.
