Congratulations Mathis! A well deserved destinction. The single best defensive play I ever saw in a football game was in 2002 when we played JSU in Memorial stadium. We had no offense that year, and needed the defense to create scoring opportunities for our offense. JSU had the ball in the 1st half, and once the ball was snapped Robert Mathis was in the backfield. He did his patented strip-fumble sack, recovered it, and rumbled into the endzone. I knew we were witnessing greatness, and a for sure future NFL star at that moment. He was clearly head and shoulders above anyone else on the field.

He was a hidden jewel. When Ron Cooper found Mathis he wasn't even there to recruit him. He was interested in another player and just happened to watch the film the coach was showing him and saw Mathis making plays all over the field. He asked who he was and told him that he didn't have a scholarship for him but if he walked on he would be able to earn one the following year. The rest is history! What God has for you is for you and there is nothing no human being can do to take it away or stop it! All praises!
