ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Rivian Automotive is halting construction of its planned $5 billion factory in Georgia.

On Thursday, the California-based electric vehicle manufacturer announced it plans to produce its new R2 vehicle at its facility in Normal, Illinois, instead of the planned Georgia facility.

“With Rivian, it surprises me that they would either halt or abandon,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson, in an interview with Atlanta News First on Thursday.

“We’ll see what happens longterm, because they may have someone step in and buy them and it may get restarted at some point. We’ll see what happens, but certainly not what we would want,” Thompson reacted.

The R2, along with the company’s new R3 model, were announced by Rivian founder and CEO R.J. Scaringe Thursday.

They were initially planned to be built at the Georgia facility.

Business aint what they expected. Looks like they're about to pull the same move Microsoft pulled with that campus they were supposed to build in Bankhead. The locals fought this plant for the longest though so I'm sure they're happy.
