Approximately 22 million people have died from AIDS and over 36 million people are currently living with HIV, the disease that causes AIDS.

- 25 million Africans are HIV positive

- More than 16 million Africans have already died of AIDS

- 3.8 million Africans were infected in the year 2000

- 35.8% of adults in Botswana are infected with HIV

- Each year, AIDS kills ten times as many people in Africa as all of the wars there combined.

- In the United States, AIDS is the leading cause of death for African-American men and women aged 25-44.

- 12-13 African women are currently infected for every 10 African men

- In sub-Saharan Africa, a 15-year old boy currently has a 33% chance of contracting HIV and dying of AIDS; in some African countries this probability is as high as 66%

- 50% of new HIV infections occur among young people aged 15-25.

- Children have lost their parents and have become orphans
It is estimated that by 2010, AIDS will have created 40 million orphans world wide, an amount which equals the number of children in the entire U.S. Public School system

- There are now 16 million African children who have died of AIDS

- Not everyone has access to treatment

- Of the 36 million people living with HIV/AIDS today, over 95% live in developing countries. In developing countries, less than 10% of those infected have access to antiretroviral therapy, which is used to treat HIV/AIDS

- In Africa, where 25 million people are living with HIV/AIDS, it is estimated that only 10,000 to 25,000 infected people are currently receiving antiretroviral therapy

- Only 0.01% of those infected in sub-Saharan Africa currently have access to life-extending medications
