ASU assistant honored: Alabama State assistant football coach Tony Pierce was selected as one of five winners of the American Football Coaches Association 2004 Assistant Coach of the Year award.

Each year, staff representatives from NCAA and NAIA football-playing schools are asked to nominate an assistant for consideration. Those nominations are narrowed down to three finalists in each division and a winner is selected by the AFCA Public Relations Committee. The winners for this award were selected in NCAA Divisions I-A, I-AA, II, III and the NAIA.

Pierce, who is in his second season as defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach at ASU, was chosen as the Division I-AA recipient of the award after being nominated by Coe.

"I'm very honored. It's an award that's pretty humbling," Pierce said Wednesday evening as he continued preparations for Alabama State's game Saturday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. "I really appreciate Charlie for nominating me."
