When I moved to Memphis to teach in 98, I was solely into conscious rap with innovative samples and beats (P.E., Wu, ATCQ, The Roots, De La Soul, Gang Starr, Black Starr, etc.)
As I established a bond with my students and did outreach in the communities that they were a part of, I guess parts of me eventually got into the flow and I became more appreciative of not only the local style of music, but other styles that came out in various other parts of the south. No doubt I appreciate it all more so now than back then-->
