“Increased demand” causes long waitlist for JSU campus housing

The president then addressed a chief concern among students and parents, referencing the University’s extensive housing waitlist, which Hudson said results from increased demand and the excitement surrounding JSU’s upward trajectory.

He also acknowledged years of underfunding, which has left JSU unable to meet the growing student population with current spaces. The president shared that the university was taking a two-prong approach to the issue – “fixing, renovating and repairing current residential spaces and looking to build better and newer in the coming year.”

I blame the College Board. A 900-bed dormitory was placed on hold in 2016. Dr. Meyers addressed the housing issue when she was President by leasing two hotels and an apartment complex to house students.

All those abandoned homes and blight around JSU. If the school just had some business-minded people. JSU could easily be sitting around an of enrollment of 12-15K.

'Right there off between University BLVD and US-80. It's an abandoned hotel and old business that should be torn down and under the ownership of JSU.

Those abandoned homes and blight around JSU were the site of the new JSU dorm that the College Board cancelled, Minerva Street, to be the exact location.

Has JSU officially notified each student individually who has applied for on campus housing but will not be able to receive it? Last year Clark-Atlanta did not inform some of its students of lack of housing until they showed up for move in day. Parents had driven all the way from California. IT WAS MAD CHAOS!!

FAMU has a shortage of 600 beds and students were informed at the beginning of July. FAMU is offering upper classmen (who have an on campus room) $2000 per semester and the university's top meal plan ($2,858 per semester) to give up their room for an incoming freshman and/or disabled student. So far, about 175 upper classmen have taken them up on the offer.

What happened?

The state blocked it as usual. But they'll use welfare funds to build a volleyball stadium at usm.

We might need to have Coach Prime call the “gubernor” about this! Seems like this is a common occurrence during the fall at a few universities.

The dorm process is back on. State legislation gave jsu the right to seek dormitory bids for price and construction as of July 1st. President said they hope to break ground on new dorm next year. It will be on the land between band practice field and the parkway

I read on JSU instagram page that they delayed freshman move-in which is so inconsiderate and disturbing. What about the thousands of students that live out of state that booked hotels and flights to get to Jackson ... many can't just change it all of a sudden.

Jackson, MS is just yikes, once again the state refuses to fix the water issues in the city and the City of Jackson doesn't have enough resources to fix it on its own. Jackson has the potential to be such a great city for black folks but there are just way to many barriers in the way ... many JSU students will continue to leave upon graduation. Jackson gotta work harder to stop the "brain drain".

The report found evidence that graduates are attracted to larger cities. Of those staying in Mississippi, 30% reside and work in Hinds County. The next closest county is coastal Harrison County, with 6% of recent graduates.

“So the Jackson metro area is really a hub for talent in Mississippi in a way that almost no other place is,” White said.

However, White said more must be done to make Jackson an attractive alternative to Nashville or Birmingham.

“We are the per capita homicide capital of the United States. We have infrastructure issues, water issues, and the schools in the Jackson public schools are F-rated for the most part,” White said. “We have to figure out how to fix our capital city because it is going to be the biggest magnet for keeping talented, college-educated workers here in the state.”

Birmingham? Birmingham is attracting Mississippians ... maybe Huntsville but totally didn't expect Birmingham. But honestly I would pick Birmingham over Jackson.

Jackson leaders sound like broken records. They been trying to figure out how to fix the capital city for years with no progress honestly ... just not enough of the right (or white) people are invested. For every step they take forward, they take two steps backwards from what I see. The best thing to happen to Jackson in the last 30 years is Deion Sanders but that's not even permanent. The truth is rather we wanna realize it or not is that Jackson best days are behind it even if you take the crime off the table Jackson best days is still behind it. Black Jacksonians don't have enough power to change all the things that need to be changed and the brain drain will continue to stop them from building the strong black contingency to ever do so. JSU alumni be taking over Dallas and ATL
