After nearly a century of building vehicles powered by fossil fuels, General Motors — one of the world’s largest automakers — announced Monday that the end of GM producing internal combustion engines is fast approaching.

The acceleration to an all-electric future will begin almost immediately, with GM releasing two new electric models next year and an additional 18 by 2023.

At a media event at GM’s technical campus in Warren, Mich., on Monday, Mark Reuss, the company’s chief of global product development, said the transition will take time, but the course has been set.

“General Motors believes in an all-electric future,” Reuss said. “Although that future won’t happen overnight, GM is committed to driving increased usage and acceptance of electric vehicles.

Some of the bigger countries in Europe have already announced dates for when they will only allow electric vehicles sold in their countries.

Any company that wants to be a global player in the automotive industry will have to have full offerings of electric vehicles.

They still need to get the infrastructure up for recharging these all electric vehicles. I see more hybrids before they go all electric.

Europe and China have made the commitment, they will build the infrastructure.

Given the political climate in the US, there will be a fight between the oil industry and power industry. The oil industry will fight any mandate for electric power cars, they will win for a while, but the hand writing is on the wall.

Ford's new plan: Invest heavily in electric and slash $14B in costs

The company plans to cut spending on traditional internal combustion engines by 32% from 2016 to 2022 and increase spending in electric vehicles by an unspecified amount.

The electric vehicle plan includes the formation of a new group called Team Edison.material costs

Hackett, facing pressure to bolster profits, warned that it would take more than a year for the changes to boost the bottom line.

With a company as old as Ford, like furniture maker Steelcase that Hackett led as CEO for years, "the decision to change isn't easy," he said.

It’s interesting that Ford has announced to cut production of their combustion engine vehicles while releasing their most expensive and probably their most fuel consumption pickup truck the F-450. IMO, until they can find a way to safely produce more power and torque by some other fuel besides fossil fuel, combustion engines should be only built for vehicles that are true work vehicles and heavy movers. I'm glad to see the beginning of the end of the dinosaur Industrial Age, which IMO should be renamed the 'Nasty & Dirty Industrial Age'.

good move....Trumpanzee looks like a damn fool...he supports the dinosaur fossil fuels, doesn't believe in climate change....this will change up the world significantly.

Trump is the last thing White Supremacy in the United States has to cling on. The rest of the world is moving in a totally different direction. Except for big petroleum companies, big companies in the United States are beginning to tune that crowd out.

I’m planning on having solar energy for my home. The question is if GM moves to electric and people can power the cars at home this will be a win for those with solar power at home.

i don't think so it will do anything more. As now where we are having death of gas and diesel. The time is near when we will be talking same about electricity.
