why & How does "white flight" destroy a community?

I have question would any of you buy a home in a area with high crime or where folks (all races) don't take care of their property?

I use to have no choice, Now Helll No. I have and will buy a house there make it nice and give a person i thought was decent a chance, sorta like God did with Lot in that place in the Bible but even then He told Lot to take his family and leave.

I don't think no one is blaming middle class blacks. Just pointing out what happens when we leave. Upper class whites would prefer middle class blacks over poor whites any day.

You shole is right Cee.

Sooooo why don't the inner municipalities setup toll booths to fund the inner cities needs?

I think that would be hard to do on federal funded roads, but City governments can require all their employees to live within its city limits.

So you would like to see the hands of time turn back to pre-1950's and 60's?

seperate but equal keyword: equal

The question is how many of the blacks own the property they are acting a fool on.

OWNERSHIP, now this maybe why we're suffering so much, not valueing Owning!!

The preacher wants you to give to him so he can own houses and land etc etc

Our grandparents valued owning land etc etc How did we lose the mindset and how can we get it back?

This is what I'm getting @

Why does paper appear on the ground after "white flight"?
Why does grass disappear from yards after "white flight"?
Why does grass remain over grown after "white flight"?
Why do gas stations have lots of people just standing around after "white flight"?
Why do people barbeque in the front yard and not the back yard after "white flight"?

Also another factor is that when white flight happens, the homes are rented not sold to the people moving in. Not all the time, but a lot of times renters won't care as much about the property as an owner. When the maintenance go down so does the look of the property. You also have less tax base for the schools, roads and city services when the property values go down. We don't participate in the HOA and when we don't have the support for the HOA that goes out the window too. Then you have parents move in like the ones my wife dealth with when she was teaching that have kids as young as 3rd grade out as much and as late as they want to stay out, then you get the loitering and hanging out and the place now becomes the hood once you start getting the assaults and shootings of other Black people by Black people :smh:

That's the reason why Desoto County's population here in Mississippi has exploded over the past 20 years or so (Horn Lake was the fastest growing city in the US from 1990-2010 growing by over 400%). Them folks drive that 15-45 minute drive into Memphis to work but stay in Horn Lake, Southaven, Olive Branch, etc.

Same thing is happening in Jackson which why, until the past 5 years or so, Jackson's population declined over the past 30 years or so. Meanwhile Rankin and especially Madison County have exploded in population. Live in lilly white Ridgeland and Madison but working in Jackson.

do they have to pay MS state taxes?

do they have to pay MS state taxes?

I'm sure they do have to pay Mississippi state income taxes along with their property taxes in the local municipality in Mississippi. Also, I'm sure they do a lot of their shopping in Mississippi, which means they probably pay a lot of their sale taxes in Mississippi. This creates a financial vacuum for inner city Memphis.

do they have to pay MS state taxes?

From my understanding if you live in MS but work in TN you don't get taxes taken out because TN doesn't take out taxes (so you don't get a refund). However if you live in Memphis but work in MS... well you end up losing  (that's another reason why the population of Desoto County has exploded)

Taken from a random board

Ok, just to set the record straight: I live in TN and work in MS and have for years. This means I'm required to file a Non-Resident MS State Income Tax Return (Form 80-205). And yes, I pay MS taxes on all the income I earn while in the state of MS; I do NOT get it refunded back to me! My wife works full-time in TN so we do not pay any state taxes on her salary. You must also fill out MS Form 80-108 for your Itemized Deductions (have your Federal Form 1040 Schedule A available to help fill out the MS Form). And yes, that means if you just took a job in MS but live in TN, you took a 'pay cut'! My advise, if it's a "job transfer", point this out to your boss and ask for a small raise to compensate for the taxes you'll now have to pay...can't hurt to ask!

Ok we got Envy and Behavior, but more specifically Section 8/renter behavior.

Now we're getting somewhere. This whole Section 8 business may be a leading
cause of why the hood is the hood

So should someone move when renting and Section 8 comes in, or should we work to outlaw Section 8,
or should we befriend the Section 8ers and teach them to not tear the screen door to pieces etc etc

Everything is done by design (gov. policy)...so folks with money can make more money.

Redlining and relators (and gov.) pressuring whites to sell their homes because blacks are moving in.

The Case for Reparations

Two hundred fifty years of slavery. Ninety years of Jim Crow. Sixty years of separate but equal. Thirty-five years of racist housing policy. Until we reckon with our compounding moral debts, America will never be whole.

Blaming the Black middle class for the problems in the Black community is like blaming the Africans that helped the slave trappers to capture other Africans to be enslaved, while rich White slave owners escaped prosecution. The problem runs deeper than just the Black middle class.

At this point, some if not most black communities are so bad you can't expect the black middle class to move in and save it. But it wasn't always like that. We are talking about back in the day when blacks first started to get education, good jobs, access to resources, knowledge, skills, etc. Instead of building are own, we ran to the white neighborhoods, schools, etc. We developed a self-hate for our own and it started with successful, educated blacks, not the current black KKK. By the time rap music and drugs came around, the damage had already been done since successful blacks already started chasing whites. Black communities were already in ruins since a lot were already on government assistance which equals no tax base to support the community.

True, but I'm blaming the black middle class of the 60s and 70s. That's when it started. The Civil Rights Era had it wrong and started the destruction of the black community. Instead of fighting for desegregation we should have been fighting for Total Equality and that's it. Other than the work place, we didn't need to integrate with them.

No and that's the problem, middle class black folk don't want to live in or near the hood either. NOBODY does.

I'm in Olive Branch in the county right off 302... I pay Ms tax and federal. No state tax in TN. We work in Memphis..

I'm sorry, but white flight doesn't destroy a community. Whites move to their own communities and the educated successful blacks run behind them like puppies. Once they see us they slowly role out, 'White Flight'. When they leave there is enough successful educated blacks to maintain those communities and sustain the businesses. Instead of staying put and building up our own, we start the 'Black Flight' and run behind whites again. The cycle has been on going since integration.

That is not the case in L.A. (where I am from). Go to Ladera Heights, View Park or Windsor Hills and you will see a much different situation. Those areas are mostly black and VERY well established.

The areas you listed are county subdivisions just outside the City of Los Angeles city limits, but the nearby Baldwin Hills subdivision where the street names begin with Don, such as Don Lorenzo, Don Miguel, etc. are within the city limits. I'm sure a few of those homes could easily go for $1 million dollars or better. I used to live in the apartments right off of Don Lorenzo Dr. and LaBrea Avenue right next to the Norman O. Houston Park. Even Culver City that has a large Black population is really nice, but it is mostly made up of condos and townhouses, especially around the Culver City Mall.

There are some rich Black subdivisions that exist for sure, but my concern is the mechanisms that transforms it into the hood over time.
Like for instance, what do you think will happen when those homeowners die? Will the kids maintain, sold to other Blacks of similar economic level or get ready for Section 8?

Those neighborhoods have been black for a few generations.

That is great but definitely not the norm.
