SWAC Baseball Tournament - Day 3

But they will be better next year.. :snicker:

Lol...We will be better next year...And next year don't say I did not tell you this year..

If some team other than Bama State wins, it will be interestingly to see if the SWAC can get them in the tournament as an at-large team, given that they beat a lot of got teams that will make the tournament.

That would be a fat ass HELL NO!!!!! Defeating only 1 ranked team will not get any SWAC team in the tourney. Bama State is good but they wouldn't come close to an at-large bid. The SWAC's RPI is too low. We have teams with 0 non-conference wins.

See y'all in a few hours G-Men!
They have scored 37 runs in this tourney already. It will interesting to see if Bama State can quiet those bats. I think Hornets were surprised Wednesday night. Mel should have them focused tonight.

If SU 03 wouldn't have gotten in as a automatic bid, because of Conference Rpi was to low, no SWAC team ever will, unless they damn near go undefeated. SU 03 only had 4 regular season loses and was ranked in the top 30 in several polls, high as 26 in Collegent baseball, but SU's Rpi was 95 because the conference Rpi was horrible.

He's going to throw whatever pitcher it takes to get the job done. Maybe Renda gets the start tonight.

State had out-of conference wins against, Auburn, South Alabama (that was ranked), Miami, and others. They may not get in, but it may not be an automatic no as you suggests.

What major college teams did Southern win against in that year? That would have made a difference.

The only impressive win out of those you mentioned is Miami.

Now, all three wins are great by SWAC standards. But when you look at it from a D1 picture, USA has a losing record and Auburn is on the verge of not making their tourney. Like SUJag said, if 2003 SU had lost the tourney, their season would have been over....even ranked.

Our schools don't play (and win) enough OOC games to warrant an at-large bid.

How many ranked teams did SU beat back in 03?

ULL, #1 LSU, and I think Oklahoma St. It might be a couple more, but SU only had 4 regular season loses, with the National player of the year, Rickie Weeks, and 12 other players who were drafted that year. SU beat #12 Southern Miss in the regional in 03 also and was leading a ranked Baylor in the next game in the 7th inning until a freshmen gave up a HR.

Yep. That's saying something since Rickie went on to win the National PLAYER of the Year in all of college baseball. We would have been home with that 31-1 record I believe we had. It is no disrespect to Bama State. It is the conference RPI just like in basketball that will keep us from auto bids.

Not sure. But SU finished the regular season 45-5. But because of low conference RPI, SU wouldn't have received an at-large bid. About 37 of those 45 wins were against SWAC teams.

SU loss to UNO, Lamar, Southeastern that season. I don't know of the 2 other schools. That site I looked at it, didn't put all the games up there.

Add Grambling and Loyola. That makes the 5 regular season losses. I think they finished the season at 46-7.
