3 to interview for OC position

Jackson State football coach Rick Comegy will interview three candidates for the team's offensive coordinator position.

But he may not hire any of them.

Comegy has, for now, promoted offensive line coach Gregory Black and receivers coach Derrick McCall to co-offensive coordinators. Black will coordinate the run game and McCall the pass for spring practice, which begins today.

"I want to give them an opportunity as interim co-coordinators and see how it works this spring," Comegy said Tuesday. "If we have to move on and bring in a guy, that's what we have to do."

Comegy declined to name the three candidates he plans on interviewing, but said the interviews would take place during spring practice.

WR Moll signs late

Jairus Moll, a receiver from Louisiana, has signed with Jackson State.

Moll, a 5-11, 165-pounder out of West St. John High in Edgard, La., joins tight end Tevin Garrett as the Tigers' late signees. Moll will join JSU in the fall.

"He's got great speed," Comegy said. "He's running 4.3 (40-yard dashes)."

moll is a good pick up in my opinion. watched film and was impressed. there are several student-athletes that are available. sometimes if you wait on signing players, you get better quality. plus i think moll is very hungry and is out to prove a point. again good late signee.

Re: 3 to interview for OC position

#1) Why even waste time interviewing if you gonna say "you might not hire any of them." Who is going to waste their time comming here for that kind of "run around" BS.

#2) Why say you interviewing 3 candidates and then refuse to name any of them.

#3) You start with BS in the Spring and you will get BS comming out in the fall.

Got to call this crap like I see it. :smh:
Is it possible for this administration to make any freaking hire without making it a fuggin' 3 year adventure? :smh:

Can we just make a hire under this present administration without making it a fuggin' 3 year adventure? :smh:
C'mon J83. you see what's happening here. Comegy dont want to name his replacement. He was scared ishtless when he hired Wilson and the rumors started to swirl about how some wanted Wilson to be HC this year.

We have WRs BB. That is not a need area. Michael Berry, Lee Doss, Charles Hawkins all return. They were starters last year. We lost "Smoke" but have this kid from your neck of the woods in the ATL that is 6'5 and has been looking good in spring practice. You could ask Gram the same thing since Doug recruits S La pretty well. Maybe this kid just got his test scores or something. You never know. You already know how your coach is on that kind of stuff. Of course the kid could have been like me. Just didn't want to stay home to go to school.

LOL. Man at least Comegy don't have trouble getting his coaches approved once he hire them.

But JR, this kid is an awesome special teamer too. Last year, I dont think your special team was all that special that you all couldnt have used this kid. He seems pretty fast and quick.

So you left for Baton Rouge?

BR and Jackson are one in the same pretty much. Not much difference in the population, demographics, crime rate, etc.

We couldn't kick FGs worth a damn, but we led the conference in kickoff returns and were 4th in punt returns. One of the receivers we signed out of Florida can also return kicks and punts.

Comegy always signs kids well into the summer. In fact, that is when he gets his best recruits. We have lost 3 scholarship players since signing day and we will likely lose some more after some of these kids see that they are slated to ride the bench next year. This will allow Comegy to bring in a few more guys on his waiting list.

I'm quite sure Comegy is not worried about that. In fact, any coach who wants to be a HC at JSU is best of never coaching here until he gets the HC job. The only job many JSU supporters have ever wanted back is Shannon. We could fire Comegy tonight and Wilson would not have a shot at the HC position. Comegy wants to win so NOT making a good hire is what he should be concerned about. However, if you have a capable staff, that is what you roll with. JSU went 30 years with ONE losing season by promoting from within. We have been in shambles since we stopped promoting from within. I am totally fine with us promoting McCall to OC. I don't know how I feel about co-OC's however. You need only one man running the ship and to me that person should be McCall.

uuuum JR, you know what JSU alums do. Complain. We could do things better but we have run our university and athletics BETTER than any other university in the SWAC for well over 10 years.

I'm just glad we got him. We need a return specialist. BUT we also need a good slot receiver. In fact, we are short on big recievers this year. I would not be surprised if Comegy is waiting on big WR to fall from the between now and August. We have a good first unit but we lack depth at WR.

It seem like it is taking years just to hire a janitor around here.

It has its pros Nd cons. As long as ego doest get in the way. In most ways, the oline coach is the de-facto run game coordinator. Most of the run game in any offense comes from the oline coach. The qb and receivers coach's do the Pass game.. In any good offense the playcalling is done during the week. The con is that sometimes, the unit needs to hear one voice.

But this is why it makes no sense to have co-OCs. I think the two guys will get along becasue they have similar pedigrees and I would expect them to have respect for each other but McCall has the experience here. On top of that, we are searching for a RB coach so I don't see why you would name a guy run game coordinator.

Dan Mullen does the same thing at Mississippi State. He has co-offensive coordinators and co-defensive coordinators.

One of the benefits is that it provides stability in a program. If one of the coordinators leaves, then you have a coordinator left that is familiar with your players, schemes and overall program. You don't have to install a whole new system every time a coordinator leaves.

It can work since, as emptyright said, the offensive line coach is the de facto running game coordinator anyway. He has to work with the passing game anyway, so it's really not much different than having "one OC".

Well, I just hope it works and does not turn into mass chaos. At least for Mullen and staff, they are going into places with top notch communication equipment. And I STILL don't have clarity on who calls the plays and who gets final say. Do they alternate series? Work together on every play. I just don't understand the logistics of such an arrangement when they two want to run a different play.

Re: 3 to interview for OC position

But JN99, WRs get hurt. You can never have too many WRs.
SU good at WR. When has SU not had wr's. Gram was recruiting this kid. His coach at West Saint John is a former SU Jag. He talked about this kid last week to one of my fellow quarterback club members at SU's coaching clinic.

And if this guy comes back to hurt you all this fall on kick off returns or punts, then you all will be wishing you had recruited him.
