SWAC Baseball records

Nobody scared. Just stating the obvious. More games is actually a advantage for SU, because SU has more pitching than everyone. I like the idea of each teams best facing each other, not some down the line pitcher deciding a teams fate. Try making the tournament next season :retard: . We owe yall one from last season :upset: , and the year before :upset: :upset: .

At first glance you would think so...but not necessarily. Tired arms are tired arms and this is an offensive minded league. If your guys are accustomed to working with few runs scored on them, they may not react well to giving up multiple run innings. The more innnings pitched neutralizes that advantage...

I think it's more a matter of who is playing well right now... prior records need nothing except for seeding. A team gets hot and the bats start blazing and anything can happen when the dust settles.

Kendrick,

I understand that the above may be the case, but the economics dictates that conference administrators operate the tournament not just under the constraints of athletic competition. But, consider the economics of operation cost, as well. Such that there is an optimal baseball tournament size that would be supported by fan demands based on average player quality, competitive balance and regional specific factors. I am only suggesting that the optimal size of the baseball tournament should be based on baseball revenues and expenditures.

I agree... perhaps we need to study the cost/benefit analysis of having all 5 teams competing in the tourney as a means to boast attendance and coverage. Logistically, it could be done by giving the top team from each division a 1 game bye.

So all the Swac schools only have 2-3 pitchers on the team and everyone else
is just busters out there for nothing.

I blame the coaches for that if thats the case. Everyone can't be a starter and have to be specialist to come out o the pen. Even the guys I have know their roles and some are starters and others come in as relievers to shut certain guys down.

Well, yes, almost all the teams have 2 or 3 really good pitchers. Hence the 6.83 league ERA.

See, baseball, unlike football, only allots 11.5 scholarships with a 25 man roster. Tough to use schollies on just pitchers when you have to supplement the rest of the roster. Now, if baseball had 20 scholarships, then I would agree with you. It's tough finding quality pitching depth at HBCUs for whatever reason.

The great young pitchers are in the minors or at BCS schools.

You can say "hey, this guy needs to be in this role." Not easy when you are working with a drop off in talent. Not to mention how many SWAC schools have pitching coaches on their staff? Heck, at most schools there is a head coach and assistant and GA. But those guys don't specialize in just working with pitchers like at BCS schools.

I am not making excuses, just being real.

LOL this whole thread is joke......So to go back on some of this stuff would be a waste. 9 out of 10 coaches wanted the 4 team tournament. It works out well. If you have more depth then everybody just win the tournament. If you take care of business the proper way all you need is 4 starters. If your coach does a terrible job and can't give you 4 arms for a college season maybe you need to get another coach.

Hey TSUalum05,

Did we have the arms last year or was it the bats?

It was a mixture of both. You guys got hot at the right time. Maybe it is just the team right now. You guys under achieve during the regular season to have 15 seniors and for them to have the regular season showing should be a lil disappointing maybe they believe they can just turn it on for that weekend but who knows. Just my opinion it's a lot of talent on that Tx Sou team which team shows up is the question

Pretty much, on our side, its only SU that has a little bit of pitching.

With that being said, they will not dominate in the Swac tourney because as Mike Bigg said, arms will be tired. Swac post season games are too long because of the lack of pitching. Because of the lack of pitching (3-4 good pitchers), games are high scoring affairs and the tourny is won by minimal errors and offense.

Since I'm at the airport and typing on my phone, can someone post the average number of runs scored by both teams per game for the past 3 years and I believe it would show that there's a combined score of at least 17 runs. I will be surprised if its not.

Good post.

Hey TSUalum05,

Did we have the arms last year or was it the bats?

Last season we just got really hot at the right time -- I didn't attend the tourny last year. Granted, we were very talented offensively, but we were lacking in the pitching department. We had about 3-4 guys who I would trust then the rest were...

Our bats were pretty good too last year and we had a lot of upper classman - this year we have basically the same team offensively (that's why we are excelling with the bats) without those 3-4 pitchers I trusted.

Thanks, that's all I needed to know.

We won the championship while lacking in the pitching department. I remember that statement all throughout the season: "We've got the bats but not the arms" however we still won a SWAC tournament championship.

PITCHING - I can't check on it right now, but off the top of my head, we have been winning 7 games in the last 2 innings of a 7 inning or 9 inning game (6th and 7th or 8th and 9th) and loss.

Its easy to under acheive without any pitching (next year we have some studs coming in but they do not have any swac hours) - offensively, we can hang with anyone in the Swac considering we are on behind 2 schools.

Its just very very difficult to find pitchers at this level. I say go to a 4 team double elimination tournament. Maybe pitching can hold up with that format.

I say, get more talent. If more schools and their administration put their resources and an emphasis on baseball then their can be improvement. Why shrink the amount of teams because the talent level ideal? Just get more talent and who ever plays the best on any given day deserves to win.

Now you know that's easier said than done.

It's no where as difficult as we make it. Baseball is played year around so it should be recruited year around. Most aau perfect game etc workout will pay for the coaches to come out there and see the kids we as a conference have to do a lot better job of the evaluation process. We are getting a lot better with the new blood inside the conference. We as a conference are getting kids from everywhere we just have to continue to find new areas to recruit players. The talent level is at a all time high. The eight team tournament takes us from being the joke conference in the nation. Which we are continuously trying to keep are name in the running for. If only some of you knew the things other coaches outside our conference felt about the thing we do. We are at that halfway point baseball wise we could make that jump and become something special as a whole or we might as well go Div 2 Div 3 NAIA whatever

So why doesn't Southern win the SWAC tournament every year when they quite possibly invest the most into the sport?

In 2004 and 2008, we had a part time coach with one assistant that worked in our athletic study lab with at the most 6 to 7 scholarships to offer.

Thats not true. Cador is a tireless fundrasiser and makes those things happen on his own. Cador should be SU's AD.

Right now Cador isnt getting half of the kids he use to get. Robertson/Cullivan is doing a good job keeping talent in state. He is not getting the same kids he got out of metro Atlanta anymore and a lot of the kids scouts recommended straight to him they are spreading the wealth to other programs. Plus you getting the second tier black kids that should come to black colleges are getting buried on the bench at mid majors like La Tech Lamar Ga State and South Alabama schools like that. Now dont get it wrong Cador has did alot for SWAC Baseball as a whole just as Coach Braddy both made this conference what it is Cador has done this for 20+ years there way. Cador also has lost a lot of his scholarships i think he is at 7 or 9 and with the new 33% baseball scholarship rule a coach cant get away with giving a kid $1000.00 a semester a year. Baseball is just one of those sport where the most talented team doesnt win and a couple of those years they didnt have that complete team to win the touranment

Now as far as TSU no offense the best word to use with Candy is under achieved. Your in Houston alone there to be in Texas and a major city there is no way some of the talent he let go out of state should have went. Those mid 90's early 2000's Cador won with talent from Houston and Georgia. I talked with Jesse Barfield on a flight his son got drafted in the 8th round last year signed with Jackson State but signed. He was never contacted by TSU said his son was messing with two chicks over that way. The talent pool is so big in Texas you could win just with the talent from the state. I met a cat last year during perfect game who played at TSU I think out of 18 kids he had 1 might have signed to TSU said the coaches hadnt seen him. Not knocking anything white does. I work with the staff with MVP out of Atlanta the best black high school talent participates in this event two years ago 6 out of 10 programs were there. This year 2 SU and JSU over 100 black kids 15 of these kids will be drafted in the first 10 rounds of the draft and three black coaches there Cador, Johnson and Hardy from Savannah St. then we go back and say kids arent out there. There out there we just dont do a proper job finding them.

I been telling Bandfan thats the only reason schools are stealing some players. I know several program changing players that wanted to come to SU, but SU offered partials, and others offered fulls. SU has the best program in the SWAC and a history of putting players in the league, and recruits know it. No matter what others put into baseball, if SU wouldnt have lost those scholarships those other schools wouldnt have been able to steal a couple of players. Cador thinks he can assemble another team like 03, he really wants to go to the CWS, and you know what with his history, I like his chances.

I don't know about all of what you are saying cause in the same sense I know about 4 kids trying that won't be coming back to SU next year. The Mystique has been lost he should have capitalized after 03 and he didnt he can work to get it there but its going to be too tough. Cador been giving kids much to nothing anyways so it works out in the same way. Hell Weeks and Mike woods was only getting 750.00 a semester. the rule that is going to kill Cador is the roster limit when he would have 60 kids on the team and talent just sitting and eventually just giving up on baseball that is where teams our catching up. However he started loosing that in 03. The SWAC is two decades from making it to Omaha if Cador is still coaching then hell he deserves it. If you really are thinking you are going to make it to Omaha I got some swamp land in FL to sell you for the low low
