Any golfers out there?

I've been getting stuff on sale at tgw.com. I went to Dick's and Golfsmith's and I could tell that the golf shirts, shorts and pants were made out of different material than regular polos and pants. Me and heat aren't best friends so that's why I was concerned. I can do a Chicago 88 degrees but not a MS or TN 85 degrees. To me, that's sweltering.

Go to dept stores like Kohls or Dillards, etc. They all have sales right now and you get the stuff cheaper there than on tgw.com.

Pratice, practice and develop a good shot term memory. A bad hole must be forgotten quickly.

That should read, a bad shot....

Aside from putting nearly every swing is the same, the only variation will be club head speed which will dictate distance. My suggestion, get yourself a set of clubs from a local pawn shop and start with those. You can get a helluva set of clubs for much of nothing. Get some new grips and start your lessons with those. Then once you get to a lesson about once a week (month), and lots of visits to the driving range, you can start playing with a lil confidence. It will be addictive, I can promise you that.

Man buy those golf shirts at Wal-mart. I've been getting mine for less than 15.00 all summer. Buy cheap golf balls by the bag, look for ones in good condition. Look like new. As a new golfer you will lose more balls on a real course. Typically I lose 3 a day since I'm just getting back into the game. Doesn't hurt though because I know the balls are cheap. Get lessons, when I was young I started with Jr Golf, got some great instruction. What you want to avoid is getting a golf swing like Charles Barkley.

Recently I purchased some used Nike CPR Clubs on EBay. Got a set for about $200 shipped to my house. These clubs are a big improvement over the clubs I had in high school. I hit the ball sometimes almost perfectly straight. If I hit a bad shot in the woods, my next shot will be perfect down the center of the fairway.

Finally some things I have learned with age which have greatly improved my scores.

Swing at 80% of your capacity. My worst shots come when I overswing. (Do not use your driver until I tell you to use it). Most of your bad shots come as you get closer to the hole. I.e. chips and putts.

Distance doesn't matter, if your next shot is from the middle of the lake or the back of a tree, best to swing slower and keep it in the fairway. At the end of the day, there is no place on the score card for 300 yard drives. All that matters is the final score. So use course IQ or course management to keep yourself playing within your ability.

Tiger Woods can hit a 200 yard shot around a tree and over the lake and land within 10 feet of the hole. You can't so don't try playing outside of your ability. These little tidbits have shaved 10 strokes off my game since my return to golf. (20 year layoff).

The thing that keeps golf in the fun category is keeping the ball in striking distance with positive strokes staying on the green. My main problem is swing memory. When I have my swing on, golf is beautiful. When I leave out a few steps, the profanity flies. My main obstacle is that decent facilities aren't that convenient. But the game is cool though. I've just look like I'm playing ball rather than a golfer.

How many wedges do you all have in your bag? Is a 60 degree wedge a necessity or a luxury. Also, I have a hybrid 21 degree and plan on purchasing a 4 hybrids. Those hybrids are the truth when you know how to swingem'.

....I went a whole year (07) without hittin' any balls. :smh:

I'll be back out there this year though.

I only have a pitching wedge in the bag, but I know people who absolutely swear by their 60 degree wedges. I think the fact that as long as you hit it well, it goes the same distance every time has something to do with it. :swink:

You all have it lucky. If it was fifty degrees I would be out there. Man, when it gets in the 20's it's considered warm. It suppose to be in the 30's today so that's a heatwave. Watching the golf channel really ain't helping. That's why I was asking about those clubs. I could get a pitching wedge for $36 on sale. I guess I'm in denial that I'm a golf hype.

Well your pitching wedge is sometimes to much club for certain short shots. so I have a 56 degree and a 60 degree. sort of over kill but depending on the course I use them all.

I have a hybrid 3 iron ,4 and 5. I also have a adams tightlies in my bag. it's great in the fairway. I tend to carry one too many clubs in my bag when I play by myself. When I play with a group I leave one of the wedges in the car.

I can hit my PW 130 so if I swing wrong it's going arye. But if I swing wrong on the 60 degree it pops up in the air and the shot is short but not long.

Man, I have one hybrid and didn't start using it until the last two weeks of the season. It was a beautiful thing. It just opened up a whole new world. I knew it could knock off a stroke or two per hole (yeah I'm still a buster). When I actually incorporated it into my game, I shot 15 strokes lower. That's why I just feel that I have to get another one. And over shooting was my concern in the short game. That's why I was curious about the wedge.

It was -50 celsius here this morning with the windchill (not sure what that converts to in farenheight). The only golf I'm playing these days is Tiger Woods 2008 for the Wii. :lmao:

0 degrees celcius is 32 degrees farenheit. You a punk. All you need is a sweater and a skull cap. Your hands won't get cold. Now I am not playing in the rain. Bump that.

Do you have any tips for a person interested in learning the sport. Should a person take lessons or receive tips from a friend who plays the game. It's an expensive sport so I'm trying to take some shortcuts on determining if I should pursue it. The closest I've come to playing is miniature golf and I know that doesn't count.

Take lessons. I started totally opposite though. I figured that, like with any sport since birth I could pick it up and master it on my own. I don't have that much time. There's too many variables in the game. Bottom line is time around the putting green and later on the range and a wise use of your time and minimization of frustration would be to get instructions from a professional. I would also stress learning proper golf ediquette; that is very important in the game of golf. It's like hunting/fishing, must avid hunters know the rules and are curtious to other hunters/fisherman and police ourselves. Same with golf. Lots of rules and self-policing and honor in the game.

Oh yeah, i'm headed to the Robert Trent Jones Capitol Hill in Prattville today to play The Senator course. Supposed to be in the upper 60s, EPIC golf weather.

plus too, they have these little packets of hand warmers at any good golf shop or sporting goods store.

Also, although it will be hard to do depending on rather you are frugal or not, I would suggest not investing heavily in expensive clubs to start. I started with a $120 dollar set, moved up to a $170 dollar set and am now at about a $1500 dollar set and will stay there for 5+ years and/or until I can consistantly score in the 80s. Right now my lowest game ever shot is a 97, i average in the low 100s, so as you can see, playing for 5 years, more expensive clubs do little to improve your game compared to lessons and practice. I did start out not being able to keep my score though,, i'd stop counting strokes at triple bogey. Now i'm to the point where I can finish most holes at triple bogey, some at double, a couple at bogey and on a very good day I can par one or two using strict USGA scoring rules (i.e., hit it where it lies, no moving the ball without counting it as a stroke according to the official rules of golf),,, and let me tell you, when you start scoring like you are supposed to in a real tournament, that is brutal and can be extremely frustrating.

So. I figured somone was going to rub the weather in sooner or later. Good luck.

L'me tell ya chief,, like in another thread, I have to say, i'm officially a HUGE fan of winter golf in the south,, it's the equivalent of summer golf in Cali,, i mean you have got to be kidding me!!! it's a beautiful thing,, not one mosquito, bee, yellowjacket, nat, it's cool, no profuse sweating, no dehydration issues/buying bottled water,,, the rough is short/dead/brown/grey so it's easier to find those slices/hooks, no humidity, you can't beat it!

I missed my lowest score ever by 4 strokes, as Ice Cube would say in the 90s westcoast hip-hop classic,,,, "it was a good day" (as far as my game goes).

For you who drive a cart and walk, do you notice a difference in your play/performance? I normally walk, but the last couple of times I had to use a cart because of my lazy frantic partner. I didn't do that well. Then when I walked the course again, it seemed like I was more in sync. Hopping in and out of a cart seemed aggravating. I wanted to know if that just me. when I walk, I feel like I am one with the course.

Just the opposite. The cart saves my legs..

No difference for me other than I can get more holes in during the twi-light special with the cart.

Regards.

I play better when I walk, I walk 9 holes daily but ride when I play 18 esp in the summer time. I've been scoring 80 to 83 lately but keep in mind it is an easy course.

What kind of equipment do you all have? I just bought a TaylorMade Burner and I hurt myself trying not to by Wilson Di7 irons because they were on sale. Also, I was waching "Golf With Style" on the golf Channel and they spotlighted MS. They visited Tunica, Greneda, and Biloxi golf courses. Has anyone played on these courses and how would you rate them.

The whole purpose of golf carts is to get more golfers through the course and make more money for the golf club. That is all.

Walking is part of what makes golf athletic. It will sap more of your strength. At the same time, I do find that my overall play is better when I walk because I am actually more focused on golf.
