TUSKEGEE, Ala. — The Tuskegee University football team opened the 14th installment of fall camp under coach Willie Slater Monday afternoon in preparation for its season opener with Alabama State Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.
The Golden Tigers are coming off a 5-5 year in 2018, yet still had a chance to clinch the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Western Division the last two weeks of the season. The 2019 edition of the squad returns five preseason all-conference players with 13 starters returning.
TU went through early morning conditioning before returning to the field for individual group sessions, wearing helmet and shorts. Skegee will continue to practice in the afternoons for the first 12 days of camp ahead of classes starting Aug. 21. Each day will feature a post-practice period that includes dinner, treatments and final team meetings during the evening.
The Golden Tigers will open the 2019 season in front of another anticipated sellout crowd of 25,442 in Montgomery against rival Alabama State. Last year fans witnessed an overtime thriller inside ASU Stadium for only the third meeting since 2012. TU travels to Frankfort, Ky. week two for an early SIAC West Division battle with Kentucky State Sept. 14. TU has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two schools.
