Edward Joyner, Sr., former head men’s basketball coach at Livingstone College passed away on Wednesday in Hampton, Virginia at the age of 68.
Edward “Buck” Joyner, Sr. began coaching collegiate basketball in 1987 as an assistant at Johnson C. Smith University with his little brother Stephen Joyner, Sr.
He became the head men’s basketball coach at Saint Paul’s in Lawrenceville, Va., in 1993. Joyner held that position until he took over the head coaching reigns at Livingstone College in 2000. After two seasons in Salisbury, NC, Joyner returned to Saint Paul’s courtside for seven more years “On Thy Green Hills”.
In 2011, Saint Paul’s shut down its intercollegiate athletics programs.
After a brief hiatus, Joyner joined the staff at Livingstone as an assistant to James Stinson for the past few years. The Blue Bears became back-to-back Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association men’s basketball champions from 2014 to 2015.
Joyner was also a volunteer assistant for Hampton University men’s basketball under his son Edward Joyner, Jr.
Edward Joyner, Sr. is a graduate of Florida Memorial University. He was married to Yvonne Joyner and has two children, Rhea and Ed “Buck” Joyner, Jr., five (5) grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
