Fred McNair is the new permanent head football coach at Alcorn State.

The formal announcement was made Tuesday by athletic director Derek Horne at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in Jackson.


McNair was named the team’s interim head coach when former head coach Jay Hopson accepted the same position at Southern Miss last week.

“It’s been a long, long journey,” McNair said after being introduced as the new head coach. “Finally, I’m here.

The former Braves quarterback joined the staff as an assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach in 2012.
