The first HBCU player has been taken in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Christian Thompson, a safety out of South Carolina State, was selected in the fourth round (No. 130 overall) by the Baltimore Ravens Saturday.
Here is an assessment by the National Football Post.
The Ravens landed one of the NFP’s highest rated FS prospects. He has an ideal size/speed combo and could mature into one of the best safety prospects to come out of this draft. A great fourth-round selection.
Thompson, who once played in the SEC at Auburn, started 11 games as a senior at SCSU recording 66 tackles, and intercepting two passes. He was also named to the All-MEAC team.
“We always talk about taking the best available, but he wasn’t only the best available, but you get a two-run homer when you also get a need filled,” defensive coordinator Dean Pees told the Ravens team website after the pick.
