Head coach Roger Cador and his Southern Jaguars have won 10 straight games and now find themselves in first place in the SWAC West after sweeping Prairie View on the road this weekend.
The Jags were once 4-6 in SWAC play, but have caught the Panthers by percentage points, even though PV still leads SU by a game in the loss column. The importance of the sweep this weekend means that Southern holds the head-to-head tie-breaker with PV as well, winning the season series, 4-2.
The title has already been earned in the SWAC East. Jackson State took two of three at Alcorn State and secured the division title and the top seed in next month’s SWAC Tournament. Texas Southern also made an important move over the weekend.
The Tigers swept Arkansas-Pine Bluff to climb out of the Western cellar in the battle for the final tournament berth from that division. Mississippi Valley’s sweep of Alabama A&M eliminated the Bulldogs from tournament contention and kept the Delta Devils alive for anything from a No. 2 to a No. 4 seed. Grambling swept a pair of non-conference games from Wiley, and Alabama State battled tough, but lost all three at nationally-ranked Oklahoma.
