Alabama State pulled off perhaps the biggest upset in Black College Football this season, defeating previously unbeaten Tuskegee, 17-13, in the annual Turkey Day Classic in Montgomery, AL.
The Hornets ended a three-game losing streak in the series in posting their third win of 2008. The loss by Tuskegee ended a 26-game winning streak.
Tuskegee opened the scoring as Jacary Atkinson found Jason English for a 23-yard scoring play. The Hornets answered when Nicholas Andrews caught an 11-yard pass from Brandon Dowdell to tie the contest at 7-7.
In the second period, Alabama State RB Rahmod Traylor scored on a three-yard run capping a 16-play, 61-yard drive.
After a scoreless third period, Tuskegee scored when Atkinson plunged in from one yard out, but the PAT was blocked by CB Brandon Averett. The score was 14-13 Hornets when Andrew Lyons nailed a 38-yard field goal with 1:39 remaing in regulation.
Tuskegee had one more opportunity with 90 seconds left in regulation, however, Hornet DB Travis Rayford intercepted an Atkinson pass attempt at the goal line to seal the win.
Wonderful ………….
How is a FCS team beating a DII team an upset? Is the SWAC that desperate for wins?
