Wimbledon 2015 preview roundtable: Predictions, top storylines

http://www.si.com/tennis/2015/06/24/wimbledon-2015-draw-preview-roundtable

What did you learn from the grass court lead-up tournaments?
Richard Deitsch: That Andy Murray and Roger Federer are in top form, and Rafael Nadal might exit very early. Murray, in particular, looks primed to win again after taking the Queens title. I think Federer has one more deep Wimbledon run in him and it comes this year. Angelique Kerber is a strong grass court player—she was a semifinalist at Wimbledon in 2012—and her win in Birmingham suggests a big tournament.

Stanley Kay: “Learning” that Roger Federer is a really strong contender to win Wimbledon is a bit like learning that the sun is going to come up: after watching it for years, it really shouldn’t require any sort of realization. But Federer’s stellar performance in Halle on his favorite surface served as a reminder that the 33-year-old’s grass game remains exceptionally difficult to beat. Andy Murray’s title run in London, adding to an already strong 2015, showed me that he will be Novak Djokovic’s top challenger at Wimbledon.

Williams advance

Serena Williams kept waltzing along with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Timea Babos of Hungary, and her sister, Venus, also won, beating Yulia Putintseva of Kazakhstan, 7-6, 6-4.

Another of Serena Williams' top challengers, Maria Sharapova, coasted through, 6-3, 6-1, over Richel HogenKamp of the Netherlands.

Three American prospects followed the Williams' sisters success. CoCo Vandeweghe beat Carolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic, 7-5 (5), 6-4; Sloane Stephens beat another U.S. player, Lauren Davis, 6-4, 6-4, and Bethanie Mattek-Sands took out former French Open champion, seventh-seeded Ana Ivanovic, 6-3, 6-4.

Three U.S. men left

Unseeded U.S. wild card Denis Kudla won his second match, leaving the U.S. men with three players still alive — Kudla, Isner and Sam Querrey. Kudla beat Alexander Zverev of Germany, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-4.

I watched Tomic play Novak today and I just wonder where this kid would be if he did not have a problem causing dad. Now his dad is messing with his sister's career.

Groth (Aussie) has a powerful serve (147 mph in the first set against Roger), but his volleys suck. He cant make a dent on Roger's game.

Jankovic tops 2-time Wimbledon champ Kvitova

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/dustin-brown-loses-wimbledon-2-days-beaing-nadal-131954780--ten.html

LONDON (AP) -- About an hour after flopping on her back and kicking her feet overhead to celebrate a stunning comeback from a set and a break down against defending Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova, Jelena Jankovic still was giddy.

''I cannot stop smiling. ... I was very brave at the end. You know, here I am,'' she said through a giggle. ''Unbelievable.''

Jankovic kept using that word - ''unbelievable'' - as if trying to convince herself it were true that, despite never having much success on grass courts, she had put together a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory Saturday over the No. 2-seeded Kvitova, who claimed the 2011 and 2014 titles at the All England Club.

Week 1 wrap up:

Men

The top 4 seeds made it to the second week and they are all playing GREAT TENNIS.
2 unseeded players made it - V.Pospisil (CAN) and D.Kudla (USA)

Women

Only 1 of the top 4 seeds made it to the second week.
4 American Women made it - Venus, Serena, C.Vandeweghe and Madison Keys - all in the top half except Madison.
Madison is in good shape draw wise, most of the higer seeds are gone from her section of the draw.
3 unseeded players made it - C.Vandeweghe (USA), Z.Diyas (KAZ) and M.Niculescu (ROU)

No big weather issues, one day of record breaking heat, but not a bad week.

I think they need to start the matches an hour on half hour earlier on the main courts.

I forgot this: I like this Aussie kid - Kyrgios half Greek / half Malay - he has talent, but will he get to the top?

Kyrgios and controversy

Another year, another run from youngster Nick Kyrgios. The Australian who stunned Nadal here last year has continued his climb up the tennis ladder, this time registering an impressive four-set victory over No. 7 seed Milos Raonic to reach round four. But the kid isn't without his controversy: Microphones caught him berating a chair umpire during his second-round match, and his abrasive (charismatic?) style has set the tennis world afire with discussion of "super brat" or "magnetic personality." What's your call?

Serena is the third American woman to advance to the quarterfinals. She joins Madison Keys and CoCo Vandeweghe, who each advanced earlier Monday. Vandeweghe upset No. 6 Lucie Safarova, 7-6, 7-6. This will be her first appearance in a Grand Slam quarterfinal. She’ll need another upset to continue moving on: Vandeweghe will face 2004 Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova. Seeded fourth this year, Sharapova advanced to the quarters for the first time in four years.

No. 21 Madison Keys defeated Olga Govortsova, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. It is the first time in 11 years that three American women have advanced to the Wimbledon quarterfinals.

20-year-old tennis player loses his mind at Wimbledon, stops trying for an entire game because he's mad at the umpire

http://www.businessinsider.com/nick-kyrgios-stops-playing-at-wimbledon-2015-7

Twenty-year-old Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios was knocked out of Wimbledon in the fourth round Monday when he seemingly melted down the middle of the match against Richard Gasquet.

Early in the second set, Kyrgios was serving down 1-0 when he was given a code violation by umpire James Keothavong for cursing. Kyrgios was up 40-30 in the game, but went on the lose it with a double fault on game point.

After he lost the game he gave a mocking thumbs up to the umpire, and preceded to tank the next game in a fit of rage. He legitimately didn't even try.

"Now what is that about? In tennis terms, that is tanking," the BBC commentator said.

Serena Slam hopes intact after Williams drops Victoria Azarenka

LONDON -- Serena Williams' latest Grand Slam match against Victoria Azarenka ended the same way as the previous nine -- with Williams walking off as the winner.

The top-ranked Williams fought back from a set down Tuesday to beat Azarenka 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 on Centre Court to reach the Wimbledon semifinals and keep her bid alive for a fourth straight major title -- a "Serena Slam."

I find it strange that S. Williams, V.Williams, V. Azarenka, and M. Sharapova are all in the same half of the draw.
