Steve Johnson is quietly winning, making others take notice

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/tennis/open/2016/08/31/steve-johnson-us-open/89665020/

NEW YORK — Steve Johnson doesn’t want you to know his name. The only problem: He keeps winning tennis matches.

Earlier this summer, the 26-year-old former NCAA champion at USC became the top-ranked American man when he reached a career high of No. 21 in the world. He won a bronze medal in the men’s doubles event at the Rio Olympics (with Jack Sock) and he was points away from defeating eventual champion Andy Murray in the singles quarterfinals.

“I’m not the kind of guy that walks around to get noticed,” Johnson, the No. 19 seed at the U.S. Open, told USA TODAY Sports in an interview. “I’m someone who would rather talk about anything else than my accomplishments, that’s all.”

Major upset -
Ryan Harrison was ready to pounce when Milos Raonic stumbled

http://www.espn.com/tennis/usopen16...son-pounced-no-5-milos-raonic-showed-weakness

NEW YORK -- Ryan Harrison looked across the net midway through the third set of his second-round US Open match with Milos Raonic on Wednesday afternoon and saw that his opponent was suffering and appeared ready to be knocked out.

At that point, Harrison might have been justified in feeling a twinge of bittersweet satisfaction. The men had been junior rivals and closely watched prodigies. But where Raonic made a dramatic breakthrough in 2011 and went on to become a fixture in the top 10, Harrison's career got off to a fast start and then devolved into a tale of struggle and woe.

Nice win for Caroline - she has been off her game for most of the year

U.S. Open 2016: Caroline Wozniacki once again flourishing in New York

(CNN)The U.S. Open is providing relief -- again -- for Caroline Wozniacki but the heat and humidity in the Big Apple took its toll on one of the Dane's peers on the women's tour, Johanna Konta.

Remarkably, however, Konta -- who could be heard saying her heart rate increased and suggested her vision was blurred after she had dropped to the court -- recovered to join Wozniacki in the third round in New York.

Wozniacki -- whose season has been blighted by ankle and arm injuries -- achieved her best grand slam showing of 2016 by winning a round and the former No. 1 went one better Wednesday by defeating 2004 U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-4 6-4.

What a day. Jack sock - big upset. greatest comeback for Madison Keys.

Novak Djokovic is good ... and now he is very lucky

http://www.cnn.com/2016/09/07/tenni...Feed:+rss/cnn_latest+(RSS:+CNN+-+Most+Recent)

(CNN)You've heard of the expression "Better to be lucky than good?" But what if you are both lucky and good?

At this year's US Open, Novak Djokovic -- one of tennis' all-time greats with 12 majors -- is a prime example.
When Jo-Wilfried Tsonga retired trailing the world No. 1 in Tuesday's quarterfinals 6-3 6-2, it marked the third time during the tournament that Djokovic benefited from a walkover or retirement.
It all began in the second round when Jiri Vesely withdrew with a forearm complaint. Then in the third round, Mikhail Youzhny called it quits with a hamstring injury while behind 4-2.
Tsonga stopped on Arthur Ashe stadium due to a left knee problem to extend Djokovic's good fortune.
"I can only wish all of my opponents a speedy recovery," Djokovic, who next faces another Frenchman, Gael Monfils, told reporters.

Serena Williams is constantly the target of disgusting racist and sexist attacks

http://www.vox.com/2015/3/11/8189679/serena-williams-indian-wells-racism

Serena Williams, who's widely considered the greatest woman tennis player ever, has made history again: Monday, she defeated Kazakhstan's Yaroslava Shvedova in the fourth round of the US Open, giving her more Grand Slam victories (308) than any other tennis player.

But longtime fans know that, along with celebrating, they should brace for more of the expressions of bigotry have threatened to tarnished nearly every victory, magazine cover, and interview of her entire incredible career. All too often, instead of being celebrated, she's targeted with outrageous racist and sexist comments.

For example, in the moments surrounding her win at the French Open in June 2015, Williams was compared to an animal, likened to a man, and deemed frightening and horrifyingly unattractive. One Twitter user wrote that Williams "looks like a gorilla, and sounds like a gorilla when she grunts while hitting the ball. In conclusion, she is a gorilla." And another described her as "so unbelievably dominant ... and manly." ESPN sports commentator Bomani Jones responded to those reactions — as well as to the ones that dismissed them as subjective commentary — with a series of tweets.

Serena needed to showcase her legendary game to defeat Simona Halep

http://www.espn.com/espnw/sports/ar...d-showcase-legendary-game-defeat-simona-halep

After a torrid start in which it seemed she might run Halep right off the court, Williams needed every bit of her legendary game -- her service bombs, her defensive prowess and net play, the power ground strokes and delicate drop shots she parachuted down here and there -- to survive everything Halep started to throw at her during the 2 hours, 14 minutes they raged at each other on a muggy night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Until this match, no previous opponent had managed to keep Williams on-court more than 68 minutes. In the end, Williams knew she had only herself to blame for the length of this match. She went 0-for-12 on break points in the second set and double-faulted to hand Halep a decisive break of her own
