College athletics has evolved into a massive revenue generator for higher education institutions, commonwealths, and the private sector. In anticipation of March Madness, today’s Monday Morning MSI Line Up looks at the top 10 revenue generating HBCU athletic departments, which have generated approximately $113.2M combined. (Note that Oregon, the top revenue generating athletic program in the nation and a Predominantly White Institution, made more than all of these HBCUs combined at ~$196M.)

  1. Alabama State – $14,070,309 (158th overall)
  2. Delaware State – $13,063,111 (169th overall)
  3. Florida A&M – $12,444,254 (178th overall)
  4. Norfolk State – $12,134,980 (181st overall)
  5. North Carolina A&T – $11,383,506 (195th overall)
  6. Prairie View A&M – $10,761,388 (200th overall)

Folks SHOLE know how to throw anything together without thoroughly understanding the details behind the numbers. Also, Tennessee State should be in the top 5.

Tennessee State - $11,715,972 (190th)

Most of the athletic revenue generated by these schools are 75%+ subsidized (School Funds and Student Fees). Norfolk State should be dropping out of the top 10 now that the State of Virginia has limited the amount of subsidized funds that they can use for athletic revenue.

SUBSIDIZED FUNDS
1. Alabama State - $10,750,355
2. Delware State - $11,413,182
3. Florida A&M - $8,957,583
4. Norfolk State - $9,613,812
5. Tennessee State - $8,646,618
6. North Carolina A&T - $11,383,506
7. Prairie View A&M - $10,761,388

According to the USA TODAY database used to compile these numbers, HBCUs make up 47% of the schools on the bottom 15% of the overall list.

*Note: The data, updated for 2014, are based on the revenue and expense reports collected from more than 225 public schools in the NCAA’s Division I that have an obligation to release the data (the NCAA does not release the data publicly). The others are private or are covered under a state exemption.

What you need to do is list the top 10 schools with the HIGHEST EARNED REVENUE. Basically, total revenues minus total subsidy.

It took me a little while to put this together, but here is the ranking for HBCU's earned revenue. When you subtract total subsidy from total revenues, you can see which schools generated the most EARNED REVENUE.

It's called being triffling. It's bad enough we have others misrepresenting our product. But who needs them when we're totally willing to do it ourselves.

I wonder do some of these people get paid for this stuff because I could have taken what USAToday complied and removed every school except HBCUs. And they still didn't get it right since they forgot to include Tennessee State.

Exactly! I mean what's even the point of stating the obvious over again in a different twist?

I guess they figure Black folks don't have sense enough to see it for themselves, therefore they make a little money by showing us poor folks what they see. Maybe I can make a little money by showing them the top 10 revenue generating NON-HBCU athletic departments.

Also, I didn't mistakenly leave off a non-HBCU school like they did with Tennessee State. LOL!!!
