PRAIRIE VIEW A&M ON TELEVISION
A one-hour documentary about Prairie View will premiere this fall on television stations in Texas. "The Prairie View A&M Story" offers an in-depth look at the 125 years of barriers and breakthroughs at Texas' second oldest institution of public learning.
The program focuses on the rich history of Prairie View, from the founding of "The A&M College of Texas for Colored Youths" at Alta Vista Plantation, through the years of segregation and financial hardship, to the many changes on the campus after the school reached financial equality. The program also explores the role of historically black colleges and universities in today's environment.
The documentary is built around compelling interviews with current and former state representatives such as Wilhelmina Delco and Senfronia Thompson; former presidents Dr. Alvin Thomas and Dr. Charles Hines; acting president Willie Tempton; historians Frank Jackson and Phyllis Earles; As well as faculty members such as Alfred Poindexter, Joahanne Thomas-Smith,
Lillian Bernard, John Fuller and Lucius Wyatt.
Between the interviews viewers will enjoy scenes of 2001 homecoming, the campus, the marching band, recollections of athletics, and historical photos of Prairie View's past.
"The Prairie View A&M Story" was produced by Sunset Productions of Houston. The company has produced many television programs and has worked with Texas corporations and universities for more than 25 years developing media
communications. Corporate sponsors are Duke Energy, Shell Oil, Fulbright & Jaworski, Linda and Ken Lay Family, HEB Grocery Stores, and Smith Graham & Co.
Texas Foundation for the Arts, an organization devoted to promoting the growth of visual and performing arts in Texas, coordinated the program and raised the funds for the production.
Look for "The Prairie View A&M Story" to air this fall on Channel 8--KUHT in Houston. The program will be presented to all public broadcast stations in Texas. Contact the PBS station in your area to find out when it may be airing there.
