Paine College has suspended its football program for two years while the institution tries to repair its finances.

The historically black college in Augusta recently announced the self-imposed suspension after a vote by Paine’s board of trustees.

“At this critical juncture in the history of Paine College, we have no choice but to firmly re-establish the financial health of our college,†interim president Samuel Sullivan said in a statement. “It is only through achieving this condition that we will have a chance of being removed from probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges and winning reaffirmation of the college’s accreditation.â€

Paine was placed on probation last summer by SACSCOC, a regional accrediting agency for not complying with financial requirements and issues related to the campus environment.

Paine’s infant football program’s was short-lived. The college’s board of trustees revived the football program in 2012 after a 50-year hiatus. The college played a limited club football schedule in 2013 before rolling out a full program during the 2014 fall semester. Paine ended the 2014 season with a 2-8 record.

Paine football players still in shock over shutdown

When he played running back during his prep career at Butler, Jeff Menefee was able to shake defenders with his strong body.
On Wednesday evening, Menefee walked out of Paine College’s Gilbert-Lambuth Memorial Chapel unable to shake the news he received five days earlier. When the school announced plans to shut down the football program Friday evening, Menefee said he and his teammates were stunned – and the feeling hasn’t left.

“Nobody really knows what to do,” he said. “Every*body is still in shock. I really don’t know what to do with my life.”

On Saturday, Paine Col*lege released a statement citing the school’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to eliminate football in what it deemed a cost-saving measure to help the college’s financial stability.

In June 2014, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges put Paine on probation – the most severe and final sanction possible before accreditation is revoked – for being in violation of nine standards. One of the issues listed was financial stability, which remains a major concern for the college.

Paine football coach Greg Ruffin met with his players Wednesday for the first time after the news dropped. He returned to Augusta after attending the American Football Coaches Association convention in Indianapolis this
past weekend.
