The new South Carolina State University Board of Trustees started work by announcing that it’s a new day for the institution.

“What we all have to understand – it’s a new day, May 20. It’s a new board of directors, a new board of trustees,” said Charles Way, who was elected chairman.

“This board of trustees is going to have a hell of a lot more oversight over the administration of South Carolina State University, at least for the first six months to a year,” he said.

Lawmakers removed the 13-member board of trustees in the face of the university’s financial and accreditation problems. A temporary, seven-member board was put in its place and met for the first time Wednesday.

“None of us want surprises,” Way told Interim Vice President for Finance Edward Patrick.

“Give us information. Even if it’s terrible, give us the information,” Way said.

The institution has been operating for at least five years with a deficit and could owe as much as $23.5 million to vendors and the state by the end of June. It’s also been placed on probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools for issues related to finances and governance.
