NCAA Could Pull Scholarships From 410 D-1 Schools

That's Dr. JN99 to you...
410 D-I teams below NCAA academic standard

INDIANAPOLIS -- More than 400 sports teams at the nation's Division I schools could lose scholarships next year under the NCAA's new academic standards, according to a report released Monday.

Most of the scholarship losses, which would be for one year, were expected in football, baseball and men's basketball.

Of the 5,270 Division I teams, about 410 risk penalties. About half of the nation's 328 Division I schools have at least one team that could face sanctions, according to the NCAA's preliminary report.

I posted an article alluding to this recently. Here's another article about the new standards. This may very well bite some programs in the butt.

Here's the ABCs for NCAA's complex new formula on APR
By Steve Wieberg
USA Today

The NCAA is compiling an academic progress rate (APR) for every program at every Division I school, a total of more than 5,700, tracking whether scholarship athletes a) remain at the school and b) stay academically eligible and ultimately graduate. Points are awarded, player by player, and the NCAA has determined that teams should hit 92.5 percent of their possible total ? an APR of 925. That, the association says, projects a 50 percent graduation rate.

For example: Each semester a basketball player who remains at his school and remains eligible (or graduates) scores two of a possible two points. A player who is academically eligible but transfers or leaves early to prepare for the NBA draft accrues one point. An ineligible player who leaves is, in the NCAA's vernacular, 0-for-2.

A men's basketball team offering the full complement of 13 scholarships could accumulate a maximum of 52 points (13 x 2 points x 2 semesters) each year. Losing four points would lower its APR to 923 (92.3 percent).

Team rates lower than 925 aren't flagged if squad sizes are small enough to affect statistical reliability, the equivalent of polls' margin of error. There's also an appeals process.

Southern Miss making grade; JSU, Valley lagging

Ole Miss, MSU also have several programs that fall below new NCAA criteria

Southern Miss scored the highest and Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State ranked the lowest in academic performance data released Monday by the NCAA that could eventually lead to schools losing athletic scholarships.

At least one team at half the nation's Division I schools could lose scholarships next year because of poor academic performance, according to the report.
Of the 5,720 teams at 328 Division I schools, about 410 teams risk penalties.

Among those are three programs each at JSU (men's and women's tennis and women's outdoor track) and Valley (football and men's tennis and cross country).

The only other Division I program in Mississippi currently below the threshold for penalty was the Ole Miss men's cross country team.

UAPB received failing grades in women's basketball and bowling. However, that school had the best overall APR, 935, compared with 930 for UALR, 917 for ASU and 900 for the campus at Fayetteville.

The poorest-scoring individual school: Texas Southern, which had 11 of its 18 sports programs flagged by the NCAA.

Texas Southern University and Prairie View A&M, which compete in Division I-A, each finished well below the 925 standard for all sports.

Grambling State athletics scored 927 overall. All six of its men's programs are APR compliant, including football (940) and men's basketball (971). Three of Grambling's women's programs were APR deficient, including bowling (833), softball (839) and tennis (786). Soccer (895) has a confidence boundary of 925 or above.
