Raleigh, N.C. - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) along with the city of Raleigh and Wake County held a press conference today to announce the sale of tickets to the 2006 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Basketball Tournament that will be played in Raleigh on March 6-11, 2006.

Mayor Pro Tem James West, MEAC Commissioner Dennis Thomas, Wake County Commission Chair Tony Gurley and Wake County Commissioner Harold Webb were in attendance at the press conference in the lobby of the Raleigh Municipal Building.

During today?s press conference the MEAC made a special presentation to the Boys and Girls Clubs of Wake County and to the YWCA. Each received the first 50 tickets available to the 2006 MEAC Basketball Tournament along with a $500 donation.

?The MEAC has a long history of community involvement, particularly during our Basketball Tournament. In keeping with our message and philosophy of community service and outreach, we thought this would be a great opportunity to reach out to the Raleigh-Wake County Community, ?Commissioner Thomas said.

Commissioner Thomas personally matched the $500 donation to both organizations.

?I believe in the development of our youth and these two organizations are a tremendous example of that?, Commissioner Thomas explained.

Tickets for the MEAC Basketball Tournament go on sale to the general public today. The tournament will be held March 6-11 at the RBC Center in what will be the first year of a three-year deal between the MEAC, the City of Raleigh and Wake County that keeps the tournament in the Capital City until 2008.

The tournament features some of the top basketball players in collegiate athletics as MEAC teams compete for a trip to the NCAA Tournament. Fans also will enjoy a week of tournament-related social and entertainment activities in Raleigh and surrounding areas.

Complete ticket books to the 2006 MEAC Basketball Tournament will be available today by visiting www.MEAChoops.com, the official website of the tournament; any Ticketmaster outlet or the RBC Center.

Tickets also are available by calling the MEAC office at (757) 416-7100. Complete books are $100 for adults, $50 for students and senior citizens.

It is projected the 2006 MEAC Tournament will attract 55,000 fans to Raleigh/Wake County, with a projected economic impact on the area of $4.4 million, including bookings for 5,500 hotel room nights.

Those numbers are expected to increase dramatically for the 2007 and 2008 tournaments.
