SEC Reportedly Looks to Block Michigan from Holding Spring Practice in Florida

SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said Tuesday the conference has petitioned the NCAA to block Michigan from holding spring practices in Florida. “Our primary reaction [is] that, in the face of the time-demand conversations, we've got one program taking what has been 'free time' away,” Sankey said, per Dennis Dodd of CBSSports.com. “Let's draw a line and say, ‘That's not appropriate.'"

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh announced last week he plans for the Wolverines to practice at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, from Feb. 27 to March 6. The SEC's push to prevent Michigan from holding practices stems from a competitive-balance issue. As noted by Dodd, spring break has traditionally been counted as a week where student-athletes are allowed to be free from the confines of football practices.

“This seems completely counter to the dialogue,” Sankey said. “We have work to do on [giving athletes a] day off. We have work to do on, how do you provide a postseason break? It seems where this is one where reasonable people could say we just shouldn't be in this space.”

Of course, there is likely an underlying ulterior motive here. Harbaugh has already ruffled feathers in SEC and ACC offices by hosting satellite camps in areas that are typically southern hotbeds for recruiting. The conferences have filed appeals that look to ban such appearances, which would ultimately help member schools keep those players in house.

There will be some big rule changes behind this. Either the NCAA stops it or the SEC will allow their coaches to do it. At the current moment SEC does not allow satellite camps over 50 miles from a school campus.

Jim is going to get in one way or the other..

Michigan: Flanagan (FL) High School head coach Devin Bush, Sr., is “on the verge” of joining Jim Harbaugh’s staff according to the Miami Herald.

Harbaugh just hired former Bama State player and Prattville HS assistant Bam Richards. He did a camp at the school last summer and recently signed 2 of their players. He's adding high school coaches to his staff to lure recruits. That's how he got that 5 star tackle from NJ. He's positioning Michigan to challenge Ohio State for southern talent.

My Buckeyes still going to beat that ass. Lol. Going to send Harbaugh back to the NFL.

the writing was on the wall when I saw that camp in the gump last summer. Harbaugh was down there in that Alabama heat playing a football game with potential recruits....got so hot he had to go shirtless! he wants deep south talent bad

Man please. You see what we did to Florida this year in Orlando. We partied in them stands the entire game. Same thing in 2017.
Considering the fact we were playing a QB that will be a WR for us next season and it was the first season for McElwain trying to build a decent offense from the 4 years of horrible recruiting from offensively-challenged Muschamp, using the bowl game doesn't show the true picture about the direction Florida is headed in. Once McElwain has a QB that can actually throw the ball to the many open WRs, the program will be right back on track.

He'll be gone before any of that talent amounts to anything up there.

The Bucks are on bored time.

Please. We aint on no borrowed time. You better hope Harbaugh don't get the itch to do something else. He aint going to stay long in Ann Arbor. And he aint going to beat Urban with any consistency. Just aint going to happen.

Ohio State still appeals to the BLACK athlete a lot more than that school up North. Hell Cooper out recruited that school in the 90s. He just couldn't coach. All Harbaugh is going to do is probably beat Michigan State now, and every so often beat Ohio State. He will be back in the NFL as soon as someone gives him control. Indy aint going to get any better keeping Pagano and that GM. They will be fired in 2 years. Harbaugh can have an easy out and say I turned the program around and then leave.

Yep. He really didn't want that job. He took it because he was getting run out politically in SF. He had no choice. But let some other job open up where he can go stick it to the Niners and he will be back. If Fisher don't win this first year out here in L.A. look for him to get ran. I can see Harbaugh being a candidate for the Rams job. Word has it that Pete Carroll wants it as well.

If I'm not mistaken UF won ten games last year. You guys ran off two #1 ranked quarterbacks so the recruiting wasn't that bad. Also, UF had one of the best defenses in the country and we ran through them like butter. It will be worse in the 2017.

Ran off???? Driskel sucked at UF and was clearly not up to SEC speed especially after breaking his leg against Tennessee. Grier was suspended for PEDs. Recruiting on offense was bad, you look at 0 depth on the OL, lack of talented skill position players, and just outright poor offensive philosophy. Just look at how the Vanderbilt, Florida Atlantic (2-9 team), Florida State, and Alabama games went. There was little to no offensive production from the team, so it wasn't hard to see that Florida was in trouble without a stellar defensive performance. Harris couldn't hit any of his wide-open WRs and peopel just stacked the box to stop Kelvin Taylor. By year 3 McElwain will have Florida rolling.

You do know Florida chose Driskel over Blake Bortles? Granted Driskel was the #1 ranked high school quarterback so that's understandable. It's ironic that both of them are from Oviedo, FL. Those damn recruiting rankings man. Michigan just released the #1 ranked RB from 2013 in Derrick Green out of VA. Kid was straight garbage. They have another 5* RB from 2013 in Ty Isaac. He transferred from USC and he sucks worse than Green.

A bigger issue with Driskel was that he didn't fit the style of offense that Muschamp was trying to run. He was perfect for a spread option offense, but for some reason Muschamp through 3 different OCs refused to incorporate more of the spread into his offense. It was hard to watch a team that I've been a fan of since my pre-school years that always was in the Top 30 in offense and PPG suddenly drop to a Sub-100 offense that was lucky to score 20 points.
