House subcommittee votes to shut down SC State for one year

[="Fiyah, post: 2399411, member: 18"]Surprise move to close S.C. State temporarily halted as outcry grows

State lawmakers temporarily halted an attempt Tuesday to shut down the financially troubled South Carolina State University for at least three semesters.

The House Ways and Means Higher Education Subcommittee voted 3-1 Tuesday to suspend operations at the state’s only public historically black college, a move that would mean laying off the school’s employees and transferring academically eligible students. The goal would be to use the savings to repay the school’s mounting debt.

Rep. Gilda Cobb-Hunter, D-Orangeburg, cast the lone vote against the plan. After lawmakers decided to sleep on it before taking further action on S.C. State’s future, school President Thomas Elzey held a news conference at the Orangeburg campus, vowing to keep the school open.

Damage to their reputation has been done.... smh

While a measure to close South Carolina State University for two years picked up support in legislation today, members of the state's black caucus called for the resignation of school president Thomas Elzey.

A House proviso subcommittee today advanced the measure put forward by a Ways and Means committee yesterday afternoon, moving the school one step closer to what many are calling an unprecedented state takeover of a flagship public black college.

Members of the South Carolina Legislative Black Caucus, who have opposed the measure publicly, today called for Elzey's resignation, voting no-confidence in his leadership.

In a statement, Elzey said that he will not resign the presidency he assumed less than two years ago.

Stuff like this should be one of the main reasons why people should vote so that the nation doesn't do what Louisiana did and elect a person like Ole Piyush twice.
Exactly. Sometimes I dnt feel bad for some because when it's time to vote you can't get hardly anybody to show at polls so sometimes things happen for a reason.
