As head coaches move backward, minorities struggle to move up
DETROIT -- The first question asked of NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue at Friday's annual news conference was why Herman Edwards was the only minority candidate to fill one of 10 head-coaching vacancies this year.
And Edwards wasn't hired. He was traded. Which means there were nine vacancies -- eight of them filled -- without a minority hiring.
"That's an issue," said NFL Players Association president Troy Vincent, a member of the Buffalo Bills. "We feel there was a changing of the guard and that there were many candidates who, for some reason, didn't get the nod."
