Andre Coward has big plans.

A sophomore from Las Vegas majoring in computer science at Alabama A&M University, Coward said his "ultimate goal is Silicon Valley."

For now, though, he's one of three Alabama A&M students who have developed a free mobile phone application tailored to their classmates. And, eventually, the app will be the foundation to a new digital social network for college students.

Big plans, indeed.

The app Coward developed with his brother, freshman Roger Rhodes, and sophomore Michael Battle of Riverside, Calif., is called "Bulldog Buzz." (Click here to access the app in the Apple Store).

It's currently available only for iPhones but Coward said the group is working to make an app for Android phones as well.

The network aspect of the app is scheduled to launch today with the release of an app for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. By the end of the year, Coward said apps will also launch at Howard University, Arizona State University and Southern California University.

Yes, those are big plans.

"It's individual apps for the campuses," Coward said. "It takes the social experience of just your school, your friends, your parties, your events and the things that are happening on your campus and puts them on a mobile device."

Bulldog Buzz includes such practical information as the bus schedule and routes around campus, schedules for Alabama A&M athletic teams as well as events around campus. But Coward said the app also features a sort of timeline for social networking not unlike Facebook or Twitter.

The advantage of Bulldog Buzz, however, is that it caters specifically to campus life - essentially providing a filter from the rest of the social networking world.
