Alabama State University aims to meet the needs of technology managers in various areas of the workforce with a new master’s degree program in applied technology.

In an era when technology is constantly and rapidly evolving — and increasingly central to any organization’s success -- a comprehensive understanding of applied technology is now table stakes for management across a company’s operations.

Now, Alabama State University is launching a new degree program to help prepare its students to be on the forefront of technological innovations. ASU will offer the Master of Science degree in applied technology, beginning fall 2012. The program will be offered through traditional on-campus courses, as well as through online courses.

The new program was authorized on March 9 by the Alabama Commission on Higher Education.

The U.S. Department of Labor and the U.S. Department of Education have identified technologies as a major growth field and a key element in education. Dr. Alfred Smith, ASU’s interim provost and vice president of Academic Affairs, said he is confident the new degree will help bridge the technological gap in the workforce by providing the necessary knowledge and skills to produce stronger technology managers.
