MOUNT PLEASANT -- Central Michigan University head football coach Brian Kelly announced the hiring of Ernest Jones as a new assistant coach.

A 1988 graduate of Flint Academy, Jones will handle the cornerbacks.

"We're excited about Ernest and the experience he brings in coaching cornerbacks," Kelly said. "He was born in the Flint area and will be a great asset in recruiting in the state of Michigan. He has demonstrated the ability to be a great mentor and role model to student-athletes."

Jones comes to CMU from Oberlin College (Ohio) where he served as the defensive coordinator and backfield coach for the past two seasons.

He began his coaching career at Concordia University where he tutored the defensive backs from 2000-03. He then coached at Kentucky State before moving to Oberlin.

Jones, who earned an associate's degree from Hinds Community College (Raymond, Miss.) in 1993, is a 1995 graduate of Alcorn State. He earned a master's degree from Concordia University in 2002 and is currently working on his doctorate in human services at Walden University (Virginia).

Ernest and his wife, Kimberly, have a 13-year-old son, Kgai.
