HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Alabama A&M University has a direct connection to a member of the Tuskegee Airmen, whose story is being told in "Red Tails,'' director George Lucas' $58 million film that opens in theaters today.

A&M's connection is Alva Temple, one of the original members of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black pilots to fly in combat.

Before Temple was one of the first give Tuskegee Airmen, he was a student at Alabama A&M. He majored in agriculture and made straight A's from 1938-40.

In a July 2004 interview with The Huntsville Times, Temple recalled how the Tuskegee Airmen had become famous in recent years. People from Atlanta to Jackson, Miss., drove to his gas station to meet him, he said.

At the time, he operated Temple's Radiator Sales and Repair in Columbus, Miss.
