AAMU Colleagues, Friends Pay Tribute to Dr. Virginia Caples

Numerous Extension personnel, longtime friends and colleagues, as well as family members all gathered at the T.M. Elmore Building Saturday, March 19, to share in "An Evening of Academia, Achievements, and the Arts" to honor administrator and educator Virginia Caples. Dr. Caples will retire on March 31, punctuating some 38 years with Alabama A&M University, as well as the Alabama Cooperative Extension System.

Dr. Caples, a native of Doddsville, Mississippi, located in the Mississippi Delta, has provided committed and dedicated service to Alabama A&M University for the

past 38 years in various capacities as Interim President, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Associate Dean, Distinguished University Professor, and 1890 Administrator.

In these capacities, she provided effective leadership in areas such as strategic planning, academic program development and evaluation, faculty performance, institutional effectiveness, technology integration, meeting accreditation requirements, and student learning outcomes. She was the lead facilitator for the University’s strategic planning and SACS accreditation efforts in 1984, 1994, 2004, and 2014. Further, she was one of the principal individuals involved in the implementation of Knight, Sims, et al v. State of Alabama Higher Education Desegregation Lawsuit for Alabama A&M University.

She grew up and picked cotton with her siblings in the Mississippi delta on a plantation owned by U.S. Senator James Oliver Eastland, a wealthy and staunch segregationist. She gained an appreciation for reading and education from her mother, who had miraculously completed the 10th grade. Although school was open in split sessions designed around the cotton crop, Caples was allowed to continue her schooling regardless of the agricultural schedule.

Dr. Caples is a very smart lady. She could be mean at times, but it was to get you on the right track. She loves AAMU and I thank her for the service she provided!
