Newark mayor Cory Booker to deliver spring commencement address at JSU
Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory A. Booker will address Jackson State University graduates during the university’s spring undergraduate commencement ceremony at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium in Jackson.
The commencement ceremony will confer degrees on 1,321 graduates.
Booker was elected mayor of New Jersey’s largest city in 2006 following a sweeping electoral victory and was re-elected to a second term in 2010.
Under Booker’s leadership, Newark has committed to a $40 million transformation of the city’s parks and playgrounds and his administration has doubled affordable housing production within the last two years. In April 2010, Newark experienced its first homicide-free month in more than 40 years.
Booker received his B.A. and M.A. from Stanford University, a B.A. in modern history at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, and completed his law degree at Yale University. He has earned a reputation as a leader with innovative ideas and a willingness to take bold actions.
