Alabama State’s baseball series with Jackson State didn’t end the way Hornets coach Mervyl Melendez would have liked.

Actually, it hasn’t ended. Play in Sunday’s game was suspended in the eighth inning after a beaning incident led to a near-brawl, causing the umpires to walk off the field with Jackson State ahead 3-2.

Southwestern Athletic Conference officials labeled it a suspended game, but in all likelihood will declare the outcome final after reviewing the contest. That’s the message Melendez delivered to his team in the moments following the game as campus police quickly escorted both the umpires and the Jackson State team off the campus.

“I honestly learned more about the opponent than I did about us,â€￾ the first-year ASU coach said. “I came into this conference with a frame of mind about how to play the game of baseball, how to go about the game of baseball the right way. I’m very disappointed after this weekend and the weekend that we went up there (on March 9-10) to see how the game is played on their side — which is a lot of taunting, a lot of talking to our players. That shouldn’t be part of baseball and I got aggravated about it when we went over there. This is Division I baseball and it should be played with class.â€￾

Exactly! After reading the article, I walked away thinking he sounds like a sore loser. Take your losses and keep it moving! It is just your first year. I guess he thought he would come out dominating the SWAC!

Alabama State returns to action next weekend with a three-game series at Norman, Okla., against the Oklahoma Sooners beginning Friday.

“It’s going to be real baseball, real Division I baseball,â€￾ Melendez said. “I’m looking forward to playing a good baseball team that will actually play the game of baseball the right way — without taunting, without talking or getting onto our team.â€￾

So the SWAC doesn't play real baseball now???? He's mad J-State ain't the pushovers like Norfolk State was. Melendez is a punk and a crybaby. The SWAC baseball has been better than the MEAC for years!!! Heck, AAMU just started caring about baseball and in the past few years they would have been in the top 3 of the MEAC!!! Winning all those MEAC championships against high school teams wasn't real baseball either. After winning all those championships, BCU yet didn't accomplish anything more than the many SWAC teams did in the playoffs.

Melendez said he asked the umpires to warn Jackson State players about their taunting “many times. There were a couple of warnings here and there but they just kept on talking. They just kept running their mouth.
:bawling: :bawling:

The taunting from the Jackson State dugout continued as Rodriguez was examined by ASU trainer Rachel Waddle
.
Was it really taunting??? And what was said? Most SWAC teams rant and rave during the games, it's nothing new. If they can't stand J-State's chatter, wait until the touney!!!

after all the talk and taunting.....

Matthews slammed his glove to the ground and headed toward Russell and while the Jackson State pitcher avoided any conversation or eye contact with the Hornets

And when you losing, start crying about taunting.

It is very dangerous for any team to be throwing fast balls at the opposing team's head! JSU shd be ashame of this type of action instead of condoning it!

Why shouldn't he look out for his players, game one, a JSU player mouth got so excessive, the ump had to warn the JSU bench, game 2 one our players got hit by a pitch 4 times then the jaw incident....Take up for your team Melendez, 7 freshman in the starting line up and 3 of 4 starting pitchers are freshman and were sittin in second in the SWAC east.....GO HORNETS!

Looks like somebody's coach received their first conference sweep in years. :emlaugh:

Sorry Hrntboy, it's baseball. He wasnt the first that had a baseball thrown at his head and he will not be the last. It happens. Are you going to start looking like this too?

lol

You're starting early this morn Blackn'. :emlaugh:
These Sally "homemaker" Hornets are killing me, Panth. Their coach is crying about a baseball game that some players were getting in their heads. LOL!!!!!!!!! They just gave the fans, as well as the team, some ammo when the tourney rolls around. I truly wish the tourney would be held in Natchez this year. I'll get with all my cousins and go down there and show them what taunting is really like. LOL!!!!!!!!

We need to put those Jsu thugs out of the conference. What a bunch of hoodlums! :emlaugh:
